This is an unusual set of three 6" x 6" glazed fireplace tile with a mark on the back that we have not been able to identify. The set features landmarks from the city of Regensburg, the capital of the Upper Palatinate and the largest city on the Danube River in the German state Bavaria. Regensburg is the fourth largest city in Bavaria.

The landmarks depicted in these tile seem to be:

  • Walhalla Memorial, constructed between 1830 and 1842, The Walhalla is a hall of fame that honors laudable and distinguished people in Germany, a memorial commissioned by Ludwig in 1826  above the Danube River, near Regensburg, modeled after the Parthenon in Athens.
  • The Old Town Hall in Regensburg, a Gothic building which dates back to the 13th century.
  • The Ost tor or East Gate with clock towerwas built around 1300. This is the only piece remaining from the original medieval wall that surrounded Ratisbon.

These fireplace tiles are in good condition with some staining to the white portion of the tile and crazing in the glaze. There is a crack in one tile which is shown in the photographs. While it is difficult to date these without knowing the manufacturer, the style and size lead us to believe they are from the period between 1870 and 1900.

We have another set of four tile from the same unknown maker which depict the coat of arms for Regensburg and the Bavarian eagle.
