This is an antique plastic 4-1/4" x 4-1/4" square wall tile in a dark burgundy color by Artcrest. Plastic wall tiles were introduced in the early 1950's when plastics began to be widely used for household products. Plastic tiles were promoted as an easy and quick fix for cracking plaster walls, that could be installed by do-it-yourselfers much moreccheaply than traditional ceramic tile.
