Interior cast iron and solid brass Russell & Erwin mortise door lock. An interior mortise lock is a lock which is used on an interior door that has been cut with a pocket or hole into which the lock is to be fitted. Interior mortise locks commonly include a doorknob hub, through which a doorknob spindle is installed and doorknobs are mounted on each side and secured into place with pins or set screws; and a keyhole which accommodates an old-fashioned bit or skeleton key which in turn throws the deadbolt to lock and unlock the door. Mortise locks have specific dimensions including backset, the measurement from the edge of the faceplate (the strip that shows when the mortise lock is installed in the door) to the center of the doorknob hub; and spacing, the measurement from the center of the doorknob hub to the center of the round part of the keyhole. The dimensions were not standardized in the 19th century so it is important to note the dimensions of your door prior to purchasing a mortise lock.

The Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Company originated in 1839 when H.E. Russell, Cornelius B. Erwin, and Frederick T. Stanley formed a partnership to produce locks and builders' hardware, under the name of Stanley, Russell & Company. When Mr. Stanley withdrew from the partnership in 1840, Smith Matteson and John H. Bowen were added, changing the name of the company to Matteson, Russell & Company. In 1846, with the death of Mr. Matteson and the expiration of the partnership terms, the company's name changed to Russell & Erwin. In 1851 the partnership was reorganized as a joint stock company and was from that time known as Russell & Erwin Manufacturing Company, until its merger with P.& F. Corbin in 1902. Cornelius Erwin served as president of the company from 1851 until his death in 1885. The company is best known as the pioneer of the wrought steel lock industry.

Bathroom Door Pulls

For the French doors on our new bathroom, it was a challenge to find the right door knobs. We wanted a deep blue to match a Turkish ornament in the floor. These knobs were just the right color. As it turned out, using them as door pulls was the right idea, and we love them!

Perfect addition to any home

I got this piece to go along with our turn that we also purchased and this is absolutely beautiful. Easy install and a wonderful, historically accurate addition to my home.

Excellent product & customer service

Despite being backordered, I received my knobs with a fairly quick turnaround. They are heavy and well-made. I'm very happy with these in our kitchen!

Hinges

We are renovating our house in Redondo Beach, a 100 year old beach bungalow that was stuccoed. We re-faced the exterior to shingles (previously clapboard) and we are keeping the plastered walls and putting your hinges on all of the interior doors. Thanks!

Perfect Match

This dresser was one step away from the dumpster. I found it at a 2nd hand store for $10. After doing a little research, I found this to be salvageable and I was happy to find your website. Your service was fast and great. The pieces matched perfectly.

Beautiful!

So happy with these beautiful knobs! We wanted our bathroom to have a special flair and these cabinet pulls completed the look perfectly. A little smaller than we expected, but still a perfect complement to the look we wanted.

Replacement Part

Selected Antique Brass Stem Caster to replace broken stem wheels on living room chairs. The shipment arrived quickly and is perfect. In fact, these casters are MUCH better than the original ones.
