This is an elegant, large Queen Anne style antique stained glass window that was salvaged from the Buffalo, NY German Insurance Building which was designed by Buffalo architect Richard Waite and constructed for a cost of $200,000 around 1880 and demolished in 1957. The 6-story building featured a mansard roof and was an architectural gem located at Lafayette Square at the corner of Main St. and Lafayette.

This window is one of 7 that we currently have and features a central cartouche design of green, purple and yellow with an amber glass border with unusual striated opalescent glass ovals connected by clear glass jewels. Two deep purple-blue slag glass spiderweb ovals at the bottom of the panel each have a jewel on each side and top and bottom. We have several of these large panels, which were hinged together to create bi-fold doors in a building in Buffalo, NY that was demolished. There are cracks throughout as shown in the photos.

Slag glass, also known as marble glass or malachite glass, is a type of opaque, streaked pressed glass. Production of slag glass originated in late-19th-century England, where glass manufacturers are thought to have added slag from iron-smelting works to molten glass to create a range of effects—from tortoiseshell to marbling. The variations in color and depth that slag glass provides make this style of glass ideal for windows and lamps, providing privacy in windows yet allowing light into rooms.
