This is a piece of salvaged antique brown encaustic floor tile in a 2-1/16" x 2-1/16" size made by Campbell Brick & Tile Co. of Stoke-Upon-Trent, England. Victorian architecture featured encaustic floor tile in both residential and commercial buildings. Floor patterns often featured geometric patterns set in two or more colors with brightly colored inset tiles of contrasting tones. Encaustic tile is unique because the patterns are not glazed on the surface, but instead are formed during the manufacturing process which involves pouring  colored liquid clay into molded patterns. When fired, the tile is durable and prevents the loss of color and design over the years.

Campbell Brick & Tile Co. of Stoke-Upon-Trent, England was renamed in 1882 to The Campbell Tile Co.and founded by Colin Minton Campbell, formerly of the Minton & Hollins Tile Works. The partnership of Colin Minton Campbell and Michael Daintry Hollins ended in 1868, leaving Campbell in charge of china production at Minton's China Works, and Hollins producing tiles of various types at Minton, Hollins & Co. Campbell took over an existing tile works in 1875 and began producing mosaic and encaustic floor tiles under the name Minton Brick & Tile Co, but a lawsuit forced him to remove the name Minton from his business name.
