Antique pair of cast iron Caldwell No.12 sash balance, also known as a tape balance, with bronze wire and square ends. Stamped with Patent date Oct 30 1888 on the side. Mortise retractable spring balances use a strip of metal that is wound tightly into a contained unit. With this type of sash balance the weight is no longer needed, so it can be left in the wall, meaning you don’t have to remove and paint the window casing or trim. One of the loops to connect it to the window sash has broken off as shown in the photo.
3-1/2"x1-1/8", 2-7/8" depth.
Good condition: showing minor signs of wear to finish but no excessive damage to the structure. The loop, on one, to connect it to the window has fallen off.
