Patience has its own
reward, right? My door knob arrived by the time I returned home
yesterday. It is simply wonderful and is now installed in my dinning
room china cabinet closet. It is a perfect match with the other
closet door in that room, but sturdier. I may end up ordering a new
one for that closet door, because the installation makes the door
close tighter and neater. Your
product was worth waiting for! Your customer service is one of the

This
letter comes with thanks and appreciation for you and your wonderful
site. I am writing to update you on the mantle we bought from you last
year (#1104-01). I thought you might be interested how the mantle looks
now, which is why I am attaching some pictures of it to this email. I
thought you might be interested in the story of how the mantle came to
us all the way out in Oregon.
My
husband and I are big fans of your website, which we discovered quite by
accident last year. We had just bought our first home (it is a 1908
transitional Victorian-Craftsman) in Albany, Oregon in the spring of
2003. Out west anything older than 1970s is considered pretty
ancient…and old house parts are not as abundant as back east (where both
my husband and I are from). In fact they can be quite hard to come by
at all, which we discovered the hard way when we had to replace one of
our radiators last winter…Radiators (and old mantels!) are pretty rare
out here.
The
original fireplace mantle in our home had been missing for over 60
years, and we had been searching high and low for mantles to replace it
without much success. Part of the problem was that I had something very
specific in mind: It was a mantle that I had never seen in person
(except in my mind’s eye), and I very much doubted that we would ever
find anything like it. I meant to type in local historic supplier’s
web address (whose domain name is similar to yours), but I typed in your
address instead. It was a very lucky mistake because I clicked on your
mantels section and just about jumped out of my chair. I couldn’t
believe my eyes! There on your website was exactly the mantel that I
had envisioned! Imagine my disappointment when I realized that I was on
the wrong site and that you were 3000 miles away! I called my husband
to talk it over…but we both agreed that we should not get our hopes up
too high because quite a bit had to fall into place in order for things
to work out for us. We didn’t know if we could afford it, whether or not
you could ship it 3000 miles to us in Oregon, whether or not the mantel
was still available, or even if it would fit our firebox. But, as luck
would have it, all of these things fell into place somehow, and we were
able to buy the mantle.
We knew
that the mantle was approximately the right scale but that some
modifications would have to be made to the structure in order for the
mantle to fit the space. The opening of the firebox was one issue and
the massive brick structure that enclosed the firebox was the other
issue. In lieu of demolishing the original fireplace brick (which had
been painted white in the 60s), we would have to widen the mantle to
enclose the brick structure so that the mantle would sit flush against
the wall. It took us almost a year to finish the project because of all
of the other projects we have been working on. We had quite a time
trying to blend the old mantel with the new quartersawn wings, but the
end result was well worth it. The mantle looks like it has always been
in our living room. I hope you like what we have done with it. We
really worked hard to use as much of the old wood as we could in
retrofitting the mantle for the space.
The
people who have seen the mantle think it looks fantastic. It really was
an amazing find. We tell all of the historic people we know about your
website. I just wanted to let you know how much we appreciate your
efforts to help us restore our house. Thank you for the lovely mantel
and for helping us bring a smile back to our living room once again.
