"Arabic" Pattern & Variations by Mallory, Wheeler & Co. (New Haven, CT) Mallory, Wheeler & Company was established in 1834. In less than 15 years they had won the highest award, the Gold Medal, from the American Institute in New York for their reversible lock. In the following 15 years, they won several silver and bronze medals in competition and again, the Gold Medal for reversible locks and wrought iron padlocks in their presentation at the Paris Exposition in 1878. Sargent and Company at one time (circa 1880) acted as sole agent for Mallory and Wheeler goods; Shannon and Sons in New York advertised their goods in 1884 and 1888. Their expertise in the field of ornamental hardware was undisputed at home and abroad. Due to an unfortunate set of circumstances that depleted the company's resources, Mallory, Wheeler and Company was bankrupt by 1913. The winds of fortune see Mallory, Wheeler ornamented hardware today commanding the highest prices paid for ornamental Victorian hardware. (Reprinted from Antique Builders' Hardware, Knobs & Accessories by Maud Eastwood) The Arabic variations shown below are bronze, c. 1885-1890. We have limited stock of each on hand. |
